Traditional Sailing Ship & Sail-Training – Franzius Weserkahn

Franzius is a historically inspired reconstruction of a Weser barge, a flat-bottomed sailing cargo vessel that once played a key role in regional trade along the River Weser. Today, the ship is operated by the non-profit association Bremer Weserkahn Franzius e. V. and functions as a sail-training, educational, and cultural project.

The vessel offers participants the opportunity to actively take part in life on board, learn basic seamanship and traditional sailing skills, and experience teamwork in an authentic maritime environment. Guests, trainees, and volunteers work alongside an experienced crew during day trips and multi-day voyages on the River Weser and in the Wadden Sea.

As a partner of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, Franzius also plays an important role in environmental education. The project raises awareness of coastal ecosystems, sustainability, and the protection of maritime natural habitats, combining practical sailing with ecological learning.

Through volunteer engagement, sail training, and cultural outreach, Franzius helps preserve maritime traditions while offering meaningful educational experiences that connect people with history, nature, and teamwork.
