The Empower Weekend on board the historic sailing vessel Vega was a deeply transformative experience for all involved. Hosted by the Fair Winds Collective, Enkhuizen Nautical College and EcoClipper, this event was designed to inspire personal growth, inclusivity, and empowerment - bringing together individuals passionate about sustainable sailing and social change. Participants shared their thoughts on this powerful weekend:
Participant 1 expressed gratitude for the opportunity to gain new skills and ideas. Reflecting on the weekend, they emphasised the symbolism of the sea’s fluidity as a metaphor for inclusion, particularly highlighting the need for more representation of women and the queer community at sea. "The missions for a better future on land and sea are interconnected," they noted, hoping for future sailing adventures.
Participant 2 shared her excitement for the hands-on workshops, which included winter stowing for sails and learning essential sailor vocabulary. In addition to learning professional skills, the weekend was also about connection and joy. “We danced together and did yoga,” she said, noting the beauty of balancing the workshps with moments of relaxation and fun. "We will repeat it, and you are very welcome!" she added, eager for future gatherings.
Participant 3 recounted her journey to Amsterdam by train, where she joined the group aboard Vega. A candlelight dinner in the ship's cargo hold marked the glowing start of the weekend. This participant highlighted Vega’s commitment to sustainable transport, a key theme throughout the weekend.
This empowering weekend was not only a chance for participants to connect with one another but also to develop practical skills in practical maritime knowledge and self-leadership. As Peggy Engelmann, nautical officer and facilitator, remarked, "The sea has a unique way of revealing our inner strength."
The Fair Winds Collective will continue to offer these transformative experiences, helping more people find empowerment, both at sea and in life.
