At the Fair Future of Sail Symposium: One Planet Shipping Narrative Report by Dr Lucy Giliam
With over 20 years in environmental science and policy, Dr. Lucy Gilliam develops science-based policies and story-led campaigns across government, transdisciplinary research, and the environmental non-profit (NGO) sectors.
Currently, Lucy co-leads Stichting One Planet Port, a Rotterdam-based NGO focused on transforming global shipping and port operations to align with planetary boundaries. She also consults on the 'Clean Fuels for Shipping' and 'Winds of Change' projects, which focus on wind propulsion for the shipping industry, as part of the Resilient Delta program, a transdisciplinary collaboration between TU Delft, Erasmus University, and Erasmus MC.
Previously, Lucy worked with Brussels-based NGOs Transport & Environment and Seas at Risk, contributing to EU and IMO shipping policies. She is also the co-founder of eXXpedition, an all-women-led mission that conducts research on plastic and toxic pollution in the world’s oceans.
Lucy’s expertise aligns closely with the Future of Sail Symposium, hosted by the Fair Winds Collective, Enkhuizen Nautical College, and Dwarstuig at the Traditionele Schepen Beurs in Den Helder. The symposium explored how maritime shipping can transform from a major carbon emitter to a leader in sustainability, with sail cargo leading the way.
